We had fantastic working sessions this weekend. Archiving footage and photos brought back beautiful memories. We saw people in our theatrical shows from the early 2000’s that have gone on to become actors, actresses, musicians, and wonderful souls who uplift those around them on a weekly basis. I came across video from the days we would travel to Atlanta’s Auburn Ave district and not only feed the homeless, but we would spend time, talk, and even pray with them. All things that I had some amount of fear and hesitancy prior to starting. They say that courage is knowing what not to fear.

I have been operating 8 Robinsons officially since 2007. There have been some tough years along the way. I realized early on that I had the type of business that never had to close. It’s 100% family owned and operated. We operate out of home offices and when we need equipment we purchase it, so there is no business debt. We operate in our spare time and on weekends and have been growing ever since. BUT there are those moments when I compare myself and the company to others and find hurt. I find disappointment when we don’t measure up to “their” success, only to now realize that I’ve been trying to find our beauty in a broken mirror. I remember always hearing my father sing. We would be riding somewhere and even if the radio was off, he would be singing. You could look into his eyes and see that the songs were shielding him from whatever problems he was facing. They gave him relief and they uplifted his spirit. They would call it “singing yourself happy”. Throughout my life, I have found moments where I’ve had to do this. Well, it feels more like a natural thing that just occurs. Mostly when I’m alone though so no worries of me embarrassing others or myself. My siblings are similar. When the road is hard, we sing.

The study of my personal history continues to guide my footsteps. A study of history is critical to any people. Deep inside of each of us are core beliefs and connections to people, places, and personal items that we wouldn’t otherwise understand. I’ve experienced the lost feelings of ignorance. Feeling like you don’t fit in or don’t belong can lead to some dark paths. So, my history is my road map 365 days per year. What are the best foods for “me” to eat? What geographical areas best suit “me” to live in? Why do “I” respond these ways to emotional triggers. When asked, why is my specific history so important, the answers to these questions and more sit idle there waiting to be discovered and shared.
