Day 012 – Surround Yourself with People Smarter Than You
When I first became a manager years ago, I learned a key lesson from an overseas business partner who managed 10xs more people as I did. He told me that it was simple. You cannot be afraid to hire people smarter than you. The key to having a highly skilled and engaged team is to hire highly skilled and engaging people. So, in essence, I learned that “Other people’s wisdom prevents the king from being called a fool.” This not only applies to business, but also our personal lives. It’s perfectly fine to keep critical thinkers in your circles. These are those that are not so quick to agree with everything. However, it is important that these types are those that offer as many solutions as they offer criticisms. Complaints without solutions are just that and only build frustration. In my personal life, I always keep mentors around me. Men and women who are wiser and have more experience. Single parents that have been at it long enough to guide me. Entrepreneurs who have had to find work life balance. So that even while I may look to be alone, I am never truly without wise council.
