DAY 060 Find Something You Love and Fight for It
To fight for something is as human as our need to breathe. People fight for relationships, jobs, pets, and even their ideals (wrong or right). We even get caught up in the fights of others, sometimes before we even understand the reasons. I’ve been spending more and more time, fighting for the things “I” love. I’ve been putting in the work. Building key family brands and helping organizations tell their stories visually is my passion.
DAY 057 – Take One Step
What saves a man or woman is to take but one step towards their goal. Every journey begins with but a single step. Imagine that. Those considered the greatest of us all woke up one morning and over the course of that day decided to take the first step towards their goals. It doesn’t matter how big or how impactful your first step is. Just make the movement. Make some movement
DAY 056 Living in the Past
It is hard to dismiss our past accolades. I have a shelf full of trophies and awards that I have gotten throughout my life. I know people in their 40’s still boasting of high school sports feats. I can sense their genuine excitement, so I know the feeling is real. The danger comes when we fail to move forward and strive to be better. I was once manager of the quarter at AutoTrader / COX Automotive, but I wouldn’t dare approach new jobs and projects as if I deserved a hand up because of that. You rarely get a team full of superstars at a company with the best benefits where everyone makes their desired salaries and customers never complain. See how far-fetched that sounds?
DAY 047 - Mom Says Our Eyes Are Bigger Than Our Stomachs
Growing up in a 10-family household was interesting. Especially with 6 boys. We would always take more food than we could eat because with that many brothers there were never any second helpings nor left over food. So, when we would get full and still have food on our plate, we were made to sit there and eat it (unless you could convince a sibling to eat it for you). Mom would calmly say “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach. You are wasting food.” As a small business owner, I often treat projects the same. Clients offer money and in-kind rewards, and it becomes so hard to say no.
DAY 033 - The Art of Getting Away
I appreciate the men in my circle more than ever these years. When COVID keeps most struggling over whether to be outside or inside, it becomes difficult to find a safe space to let go. I continue to hear of broken systems, high suicide rates, failed relationships and companies closing their doors. The best medicine I have found is getting away from your environment if only for a day. I have 5 brothers and a few men I call my brothers. We have built such safe spaces. We spend hours talking about life, business, personal goals, and obstacles we have overcome. I’m so used to it that it’s hard to realize how uncommon that is.
