Day 017 – The Greatest Job of a Parent
I gained an 8yr old son through marriage and had a son that same year. Jumping straight into parenthood was challenging and a beautiful thing all at the same time. I loved the idea of having these little people that I could pass knowledge down to. Over a decade later, I’m still teaching all the while praying that they get at least some of what I’m trying to give. One of the greatest jobs of parents is to leave your children with no excuses. I always tell mine, that I won’t be around forever, and they must be able to stand on their own. I tell them to be leaders, not followers. I shielded them from areas and lifestyle I grew up in. I tried my best to remove any excuse they could have as to why they can’t succeed in life. I have always owned a music recording studio and as an artist and tech guy there are always computers and art supplies laying around. They grew up watching me work and run my own businesses. So I wasn’t surprised when they tried music and art. When my youngest started helping me by designing logos and t-shirts, I smiled inside. When he started his own fashion and lifestyle brand, I smiled even bigger. They get it. I know that everything I have done has not been in vain. They will at least have the skills I have shared and passed on to them. With just these skills they can have a sense of self worth, confidence, and ability to generate income independently of other organizations.
