DAY 025 – Do More Than What is Required
No matter the industry or discipline you are in, there will always be those around you that surpass you or consistently remain behind you. The best way to get ahead and stay ahead is to consistently do more than what is required of you. As a manager, when it comes time for yearly reviews, it is always interesting watching reactions when I explain that meeting expectations is doing everything you are supposed to be doing very well. Most people do meet expectations. But they all want the best review with a large pay raise. To go above and beyond, you absolutely have to do more than what is required. I suppose everyone feels like that exceed expectations or at list are working above expectations. As an entrepreneur, I have to push myself to always do more than what is required. There is no boss above me reviewing my performance each year. There are no swarms of customers telling me how to run my businesses. I can watch and listen and analyze data to get to the root of things that can be done. I can trust my instincts and push to be innovative, maybe even disruptive. I know that “doing more than what is required” rarely comes with more money or even awards.
