DAY 032 – Mom Says We Make Do
My mom has a wealth of knowledge. She has never had a traditional job. She was a candy lady for a period, and she was also a babysitter for decades. But with eight kids and all those years of living comes a tremendous amount of wisdom and common-sense life skills. She is the one that taught us that “if you don’t have what you need, use what you got.” My hardest time learning this was when I first started working. I would wait for my dad to come home from work and then get a ride to draw and paint signs at Kroger. Sweet job to have as a high school senior. I was pacing complaining near tearing because dad was late coming home again, and I was about to be late for work. Mom sat me down and calmly told me that it is not my dad’s responsibility to get me to work on time. She told me that I better never depend on another person to get me what I need. I could have cried, but we didn’t grow up that way. I held it all in and got my things and walked (it was sprinkling raining). It was about an hour walk. I would eventually quit the job (that’s another story), but I never forgot the lesson. I haven’t depended on other people to handle my business ever since that day…
