DAY 035 - Sing Yourself Happy
I remember always hearing my father sing. We would be riding somewhere and even if the radio was off, he would be singing. You could look into his eyes and see that the songs were shielding him from whatever problems he was facing. They gave him relief and they uplifted his spirit. They would call it “singing yourself happy”. Throughout my life, I have found moments where I’ve had to do this. Well, it feels more like a natural thing that just occurs. Mostly when I’m alone though so no worries of me embarrassing others or myself. My siblings are similar. When the road is hard, we sing. When the food is good, we craft songs of happiness. When the trip is far and the driver is sleepy, we sing loudly. My father taught us to sing through anything. You see he is also a pastor, and we grew up watching him lead congregations of 100’s of people in song and prayer. Its not until I am faced with great difficulty and a song comes to mind and singing it brings me a sense of peace that I realize I’ve been greatly influenced by him. So, if you see me randomly singing when I’m walking through a grocery store or catch me singing while I’m cooking a meal, don’t label me as crazy. Don’t dismiss me as misguided or lost. Know that I am “singing myself happy” and navigating through life the best way I know how.
