DAY 047 - Mom Says Our Eyes Are Bigger Than Our Stomachs

DAY 047 - Mom Says Our Eyes Are Bigger Than Our Stomachs

Growing up in a 10-family household was interesting. Especially with 6 boys. We would always take more food than we could eat because with that many brothers there were never any second helpings nor left over food. So, when we would get full and still have food on our plate, we were made to sit there and eat it (unless you could convince a sibling to eat it for you). Mom would calmly say “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach. You are wasting food.” As a small business owner, I often treat projects the same. Clients offer money and in-kind rewards, and it becomes so hard to say no. I’ve gotten a week stay in a multimillion-dollar cabin in the mountains of Helen, GA from a website deal. I’ve gotten round trip flights to anywhere in the U.S. (I went to Vegas). But there comes a time when it is simply too much work to do and if you haven’t learned the art of saying no, it could cripple your business. If I can’t deliver projects on time, then customers get upset and angry customers not only tell others, but they go to social media. In those moments, I hear the voice of my mom. “Your eyes got bigger than your stomach, didn’t they boy?” Good planning and setting measurable goals help tremendously. Knowing when to say NO is a life saver. Even on a job there are times when it’s ok to let your management know that you are feeling overwhelmed or overworked. That will at least start a discussion about positive steps forward. You can build a case to hire someone, or you may simply need time off work to vacation. Let us not practice sitting at the table with a bunch of unfinished work in front of us waiting on “Mom” to come to our aide.
