DAY 053 Your Experiences Make You Who You Are
I often talk to those that I mentor about their experiences and how they shape who they are. When we are young, we often make bad decisions based on several factors including fear, peer pressure, and ignorance. As a manager, I often have employees confide in me about things that are not necessarily work related. Early in my career, one particular employee was struggling with life and self confidence at one point and my response begin with “you are a beautiful and smart woman….”. She stopped me mid-sentence and told me she did not care about her being beautiful. She asked me what that had to do with anything. It was my 1st lesson in managing the person and not the job. It quickly taught me that beauty is not a job or life skill that could be used to build confidence. That experience not only made me a better manager, but it made me a better man. It taught me to take time to truly get to know people and grow to understand their needs beyond the physical job. I appreciate my experiences good and bad. I love the man they have shaped me into and look forward to the man that I am to become as a result of them. Your experiences make you who you are.
