DAY 056 Living in the Past
It is hard to dismiss our past accolades. I have a shelf full of trophies and awards that I have gotten throughout my life. I know people in their 40’s still boasting of high school sports feats. I can sense their genuine excitement, so I know the feeling is real. The danger comes when we fail to move forward and strive to be better. I was once manager of the quarter at AutoTrader / COX Automotive, but I wouldn’t dare approach new jobs and projects as if I deserved a hand up because of that. You rarely get a team full of superstars at a company with the best benefits where everyone makes their desired salaries and customers never complain. See how far-fetched that sounds? I continue to push myself to lead new challenging projects. This allows me to believe that my best days are in front of me. Kids help because they seem to change monthly so they naturally push you to grow with them. I’ve been the father of a football star, tennis MVP, shark trainer, trumpet player, skateboarder, break dancer and even fashion designer. The list grows faster than I can keep up. I love every minute of it because it keeps me researching and adapting and participating in things, I haven’t thought of doing myself. Let’s appreciate the past, live in the now, and plan for the future.
