DAY 103 – What Can You Live Without
Since I left corporate America, I have learned one main lesson on finances. Attaining Richness and wealth is not so much about what we make as it is about what we can do without. I had just come back from driving my son to school, then planted lettuce in my garden and cooked me some breakfast. I smiled looking out the sunroom window at an apple tree I had planted over a year ago now thriving in the backyard. Then I logged in to my laptop for work and thought “this is really a beautiful life.” None of it would be possible without loss. My projects had completed at The Home Depot, and I decided not to return after a meeting about my options there. I decided to work full time with my family company. At the same time, I was offered a role with Virginia Tech University. I took these roles knowing that even together they were almost 40% less than my previous salary. I was in a car accident just weeks before and totaled my car. I paid cash for a smaller gas friendly GM Certified Chevy Cruze. I was in the last years of a Chapter 13 case consolidating debt from a divorce which had left me a single father. Imagine the loss? Fast forward to now, I live a stress-free life. I decreased my cost of living by 1000’s and adapted to a new way of living. In the 1st year I saved more than I had ever done with a combination of cash, stocks, and real estate. My net worth back then was negative. I personally watched wealth grow not because I earned so much more, but because I learned to live with so much less!
