DAY 283 – Never Cheat Yourself
I’ve noticed that when I do my morning 3-mile exercise routine, I often think to stop halfway through. I tell myself that I can just do the other half that evening after work. I can see my car in the distance almost as if to hint towards easy access to home. But I don’t want to create a culture of cheating within me. I gather my strength and my breath and may even say out loud, “Don’t Cheat Yourself!” If I can cheat myself then wouldn’t it be super easy to justify cheating others. It has taught me the power of shifting my mind state. By mile 3, I have new energy and even if I’m barely placing one foot in front of the next, there is much to be said about continued forward motion. There is a hill that hurts so much with its rocks and tree roots sticking out as if they are warnings for my ankles. But every single time I reach the top I smile. It never gets old. I never get tired of accomplishing that goal. At the bottom of it I say to myself “Don’t cheat yourself.” So, after months of doing this, when I face problems at work and life gets difficult and I’m turned around staring at the easy way out or contemplating quitting, I only have to say, “Don’t Cheat Yourself!” If I’m even contemplating doing the opposite of what I’ve committed to in a relationship, I think “Don’t Cheat Yourself”. When you are conditioned to not cheating yourself, you should master treating others with the same respect by default.
