DAY 338 – Your Path is Yours Alone
I really dislike all the negative comments, blogs and videos that are coming out as Deon Sanders announces taking a job offer with Colorado. As a manager, I had many discussions about raises and the lack of funds to give them. I told my people that you never let any organization determine your value. If you as a grown person can’t get what you feel you deserve, then you MUST be willing to go get it from where you can. Only YOU know when it is time to move to the next step in your life. Improving yourself physically, mentally, financially, and more, is completely up to you. So, when I logged on and seen others trying to decide for another grown man I was disturbed. He established a great program with a proven and repeatable business model for ALL HBCUs. Bring in ex athletes with great reputations and access to resources and put them in positions of power. Work with them to change your existing program from recruiting to improving the school grounds and facilities. Embed yourselves into your state and community via servant leadership. Allow your stakeholders and students to be held to a higher standard even if that means losing key people. Then keep going and watch the results improve. But we must not hold each other back when we get opportunity to change more lives and impact more communities. Colorado was 1-8 this year. The last in their conference. Deon’s model of not only coaching but recruiting and bringing fans into stadiums is more valuable than the $5M a year he is rumored to be offered (Significantly more than the $300yr that JSU initially paid) but he sees an opportunity. Just like at JSU, there is an opportunity to pave a new path that will be just as difficult if not more. I’m willing to sit back and watch Primetime work. I see a man that is not just about money, but about diving into opportunities to lead where it is most difficult. He seems addicted to changing the lives of others for the better and I’m all for it! I pray that JSU can continue what he started and established.
