DAY 252 – Letting People Down isn’t Always Letting Yourself Down
It’s ok to let other people down. There are times when we must realize that we control our narratives. When we allow too many other people to place expectations on us, we often perform simply for the fact that we don’t want to let “them” down. But what about us? What about you? What do you truly desire? It may be something totally opposite.
Day 231 - What are you passionate about?
I remember when I was much younger I would never fight my sleepless nights. I would embrace the time and do art work, produce music or do web and graphic design. When I think about all those hours of practice I put in, I smile. Those are things that I once loved. Fast forward to now and most times I complain about others asking me to do art. One day I retired from doing creative work that doesn't come with a long term contract. I shy away from mural commissions and portrait requests, both things that kept me fed through college and my early adult years. Only now do I realize I was tapped into my passion and my potential in a way that is almost rare.
DAY 229 – Tap into your Greatness
Life has taught me that Greatness is never fleeting. If you can be great in one thing you can be great in other things. I look back at the jobs and careers I have had over the years and often wonder what life would be like if I would have stayed. I see my peers becoming the next leaders of many of the organizations and think “I was right there on the same path. I would be and do great there.” But then reality sets in and I realize that the experiences that make me great come from my ability to move around and adapt.
DAY 228 – Think Before You Give
If you have to think before you give, you are trading not giving. I didn’t like this statement when I first read it. Because I reserve the right to think before I give. Then I realized that there are times that I don’t think before I give. Times when I have given my last without a second thought. Times when I have voluntarily given without being asked to. These moments are genuine and full of love and care.
DAY 224 – Doing More than You Are Responsible For
Success is being willing to do more than you are being paid for. I learned this through trial and error. No college class taught me this. No mentor sat me down to deliver this message. While a designer at AutoTrader I recognized that around the holiday’s most people took time off and were in a rush to leave to get home each day. I started working those hours and saving my vacations for after. When directors would come to the creative floor looking for help with last minute pitches, I would often be the only person around skilled enough to create their visions. I never said no back then.
