DAY 057 – Take One Step
What saves a man or woman is to take but one step towards their goal. Every journey begins with but a single step. Imagine that. Those considered the greatest of us all woke up one morning and over the course of that day decided to take the first step towards their goals. It doesn’t matter how big or how impactful your first step is. Just make the movement. Make some movement
DAY 056 Living in the Past
It is hard to dismiss our past accolades. I have a shelf full of trophies and awards that I have gotten throughout my life. I know people in their 40’s still boasting of high school sports feats. I can sense their genuine excitement, so I know the feeling is real. The danger comes when we fail to move forward and strive to be better. I was once manager of the quarter at AutoTrader / COX Automotive, but I wouldn’t dare approach new jobs and projects as if I deserved a hand up because of that. You rarely get a team full of superstars at a company with the best benefits where everyone makes their desired salaries and customers never complain. See how far-fetched that sounds?
DAY 055 – Being Still is a Valid Option
There have been times in my life where I felt the need to go anywhere the wind blew. I thought that I was following my natural career path. The last few years have been surprising. I begin to really focus on where I was at. I love a challenge and find I have a passion for solving business problems. Each time I would implement solutions, the business would grow and become a little easier to navigate. Collaboration with others netted even bigger results.
DAY 054 – Be Who You are Created to Be
It becomes increasingly hard to be yourself in a society where every action is under the microscope. While in corporate America, I hid my connection to Atlanta’s hip hop scene for over 10yrs. We organized events, fed the homeless weekly on Atlanta’s classic Auburn Ave, and produced theatrical shows around the city. I learned the hard way that you can’t be so hungry to please the masses that you fail to represent yourself. The skills that I learned as “DeBlak” aka “Black” were what made me such an asset on the job. I understood marketing and branding from a grassroots perspective.
DAY 053 Your Experiences Make You Who You Are
I often talk to those that I mentor about their experiences and how they shape who they are. When we are young, we often make bad decisions based on several factors including fear, peer pressure, and ignorance. As a manager, I often have employees confide in me about things that are not necessarily work related. Early in my career, one particular employee was struggling with life and self confidence at one point and my response begin with “you are a beautiful and smart woman….”. She stopped me mid-sentence and told me she did not care about her being beautiful. She asked me what that had to do with anything.
