DAY 048 - Create Strong Children
My youngest son is becoming a man. He is excelling in some areas, while I must push him and direct him in others. He is about to be 17 and this is the most difficult stage of parenting that I have ever experienced. He is an artist like me. A creative that can sew a custom hoodie one morning, jump down six flights of steps on his skateboard that afternoon, and dance like he floats on clouds doing air flares that night at a breakin competition. I’m heading into the last year of high school with a young man that thinks he has life figured out, that struggles asking for help (unless its for money, he has no problems with that), and seems to want to figure the world out on his own. One thing that I have learned from my own father is that parenting never stops, even when it is difficult. As hard as it is, I do understand that “It is easier to create strong boys than to repair broken men.”
DAY 047 - Mom Says Our Eyes Are Bigger Than Our Stomachs
Growing up in a 10-family household was interesting. Especially with 6 boys. We would always take more food than we could eat because with that many brothers there were never any second helpings nor left over food. So, when we would get full and still have food on our plate, we were made to sit there and eat it (unless you could convince a sibling to eat it for you). Mom would calmly say “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach. You are wasting food.” As a small business owner, I often treat projects the same. Clients offer money and in-kind rewards, and it becomes so hard to say no.
DAY 046 - The Power of Persistence
I have a lot of clients from my past that I still check on. I visit the old websites I designed looking for growth. I see if the brand has grown well. There are those that make me smile SUPER BIG! When I go to websites or social media pages and am unable to find any links to work that I either completed or assisted in the creation of, I do feel a way. I want growth for them all. I desire success for everyone. One that I have been particularly proud of is the Black Health Matters Movement. I remember talking with Rosalyn Daniels and hearing her lay out a plan of the whats, whens, and hows of Black Health Matters. It sounded like an enormous feat to even imagine. She spoke with confidence, and I knew that she had great experience from her background and existing network.
DAY 038 - Knowing What NOT to Fear
We had fantastic working sessions this weekend. Archiving footage and photos brought back beautiful memories. We saw people in our theatrical shows from the early 2000’s that have gone on to become actors, actresses, musicians, and wonderful souls who uplift those around them on a weekly basis. I came across video from the days we would travel to Atlanta’s Auburn Ave district and not only feed the homeless, but we would spend time, talk, and even pray with them. All things that I had some amount of fear and hesitancy prior to starting. They say that courage is knowing what not to fear.
Day 015 - Not Allowed to Be Scared
As I look back on my upbringing, I recall so many moments and situations where fear would take over my soul it seemed. But in those times, there were things that must be done and there was no way out. I couldn’t tell my parents I was scared of the dark when tasked with walking through the wooded path at night to my uncles’ house for whatever reason. When you are not allowed to be scared, it doesn’t mean that you won’t be. It simply means that you still have to accomplish your mission or goal regardless of the fear. My first time speaking to a crowd of people felt like I would die from nervousness.
