My mom has a wealth of knowledge. She has never had a traditional job. She was a candy lady for a period, and she was also a babysitter for decades. But with eight kids and all those years of living comes a tremendous amount of wisdom and common-sense life skills. She is the one that taught us that “if you don’t have what you need, use what you got.” My hardest time learning this was when I first started working. I would wait for my dad to come home from work and then get a ride to draw and paint signs at Kroger.

I grew up hearing that I should never put off for tomorrow what I could take care of today. As I got older and had kids, started businesses, and gained more responsibilities at work, it got easier to miss steps and let task stack up. I started to make physical list so that I could check off things as they are done. I tried apps and electronic list, but they never had the same effect as physically writing on a piece of paper.  If you do the great things when they are small, difficult things are made easy.

There have been several situations in my life that have caused me to pivot and take an entirely different direction.  At the time I was angry and rebellious even. I would even fight for what I felt was my right to stay exactly where I was. Fast forward years later and I can see how every change has led to me being where I am now, owning and operating a digital TV network with my family. I’ve learned that if you never change direction, you may end up where you are headed.

One of the best feelings I get is from being told and shown that I am loved. What I have discovered is that there is a pure energy that comes from showing love. This produces an incredible effect that can be described as a deep courage. To love regardless of how you are treated is powerful. Loving someone or something is to step out on faith especially when done regardless of how you are treated. To love is the ultimate gamble.

I always want to walk my own path. I was taught that I should never count another man’s money early in life. Instead, I should focus my everything on mine. It gets to be very challenging to move forward with blinders on when social media is everywhere. At one point I couldn’t remember that last time I simply “surfed the web”. Now everyone scrolls their phones looking at random YouTube and TikTok videos. We stare blanketly at 1,000s of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter post per day. I’ve been practicing restraint in that aspect. I heard an African proverb that resonated with me today. “Don’t set sail on someone else’s star.”
